Based on the feedback given to us by YFVCs, we have developed training courses to offer greater flexibility for our existing Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres.
These training sessions will be held over a morning or afternoon in a variety of locations and will be lead by a member of our team of Associate Trainers.
Newly designated centres should attend the full day NaTHNaC-led seminars.
New Centres
The cost to attend a Training Seminar for new centres is £90.
Update Seminars
The cost to attend an Update Seminar for existing centres is £75.
This cost covers:
- Administrative costs involved in running the seminars
- Handouts and teaching materials
- Provision of refreshments as appropriate
This fee is non-refundable.
Cheques should be made payable to UCLH NHS Foundation Trust
The aim of the training seminars is to provide health care professionals working in designated centres with theoretical knowledge and understanding of yellow fever disease and vaccination in order to:
- Accurately advise travellers about yellow fever disease risk and prevention
- Administer vaccine in a safe manner
- Comply with the requirements of the International Health Regulations as stipulated by the World Health Organisation
The seminar will provide information and promote discussion on topics including:
- Global epidemiology and transmission of yellow fever
- World Health Organization, International Health Regulations
- Endemic and infected areas for yellow fever
- Yellow fever vaccine
- Risk assessment for travel
The seminars are informal and are interactive.
Newly designated centres
At least one member of staff is required to attend training prior to receiving designation status. Please ensure you check training dates and locations before submitting your designation application form.
Existing YFVCs
At least one member of staff from each existing YFVC are required to attend training once every two years to maintain designation status
Yellow fever vaccine can only be administered at centres which are designated by the national health administration, defined by WHO. This requirement is to ensure the correct method of vaccine storage, administration and certification. The responsibility for administration of desginated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres (YFVCs) in England was devolved to NaTHNaC in July 2003.
In view of the requirement for NHS organisations to improve and assure quality through a system of clinical governance, NaTHNaC is requiring standards of practice within YFVCs in England. Private travel clinics are expected to maintain standards equal to those in the NHS.
In order to maintain standards of practice in administration of yellow fever vaccine, NaTHNaC has established a one-day training seminar for new centres, and a half-day update seminar for health profesionals at YFVCs to attend every two years to meet designation requirements.
Training days focus entirely on yellow fever and have been found of great value to designated YFVCs.
