The Travel Association (ABTA) and Federation of Tour Operators: working together to improve standards of health and safety for British travellers
In 2008 The Travel Association (ABTA) and the Federation of Tour Operators (FTO) amalgamated. Jointly, ABTA and the FTO form an authoritative body representing the travel industry in the UK.
ABTA and the FTO work together on important issues affecting British travellers, particularly relating to standards within the industry. The FTO have published the Preferred Codes of Practice, which details health and safety issues for those involved in travel and tourism, including guidelines on food hygiene, fire, beach, villa and pool safety, communicable disease and natural disasters.
The continuing collaboration between ABTA and the FTO ensures that standards are maintained and improved by a number of measures including lobbying at local level and the provision of training to those working within the industry. A specially developed health and safety training DVD (Safe and Sound) was released on 3 December 2009, complementing the Preferred Code of Practice and providing key safety information on holiday accommodation; this training resource will be of interest to those working in travel and tourism in the UK and overseas.
