14 April 2004: Avian Influenza A (H5N1) Update

Cases of avian influenza in humans continue to occur in South East Asia, although the frequency of new cases has declined with only two human cases reported since the last update of 24 February. To date, Thailand has reported 12 cases (with 8 deaths) and Vietnam 22 cases (with 15 deaths) There also appears to be improved control of avian outbreaks of H5N1 infection, but they continue to be reported from many of the affected countries (, China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.)

There are no travel restrictions to these countries although travellers should still take precautions. These include:

  • Avoid visiting live animal markets and poultry farms
  • Avoid contact with surfaces contaminated with animal faeces
  • Do not attempt to bring any live poultry products back to the UK

There is no evidence to suggest human- to- human transmission, with all human cases occurring in those who have had direct contact with birds. The ingestion of thoroughly cooked poultry products does not present a risk for infection.
