ABTA and FCO launch Balcony Safety Abroad

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has highlighted 13 cases of UK tourists accidentally falling from balconies this summer. Three of these tourists died, whilst the others sustained serious injuries. This number of balcony related accidents already matches the total number for the whole of 2011.

Most of these accidents involved young people, with alcohol often playing a part. Two popular Spanish destinations; Majorca and Ibiza, have reported the majority of incidents (9 cases) so far for UK travellers in 2012.

As a result, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) and the FCO have launched a prevention campaign on balcony safety which includes online information and distribution of leaflets in resorts to raise awareness of this hazard.

ABTA and FCO advise travellers to:

• Understand your risks – climbing over or jumping off balconies can have serious consequences

• Know your limit – alcohol can impair your judgment and hot climates can increase the effect of drinking

• Get comprehensive travel insurance – be prepared if something goes wrong.
